Why Starter Build Choice Matters in PoE2

Path of Exile 2 kept the philosophy from PoE1 — you can build almost anything, but the early game is significantly more dangerous than the late game. Your starter needs to survive the campaign, clear maps efficiently, and not depend on expensive items to function.

Best Starter: Stormweaver (Sorceress)

Skill: Ice Nova of Frostbolts Ascendancy: Stormweaver Budget: Very low (campaign-viable with whites)

Ice Nova of Frostbolts remains the cleanest starter in the game. You cast Frostbolts, then detonate them with Ice Nova for massive coverage and solid single-target. The combo is easy to understand, hard to mess up, and scales into endgame with just skill gems.

Pros: Great clear speed, freezes most content, cheap to start Cons: Struggles with phys-reflect maps until you have Spirit gems for leech

Second Pick: Rake Ranger (Lightning Arrow)

Skill: Lightning Arrow Ascendancy: Deadeye Budget: Low-medium

Lightning Arrow pierces and chains, making it one of the fastest clear skills in the game. Deadeye's Tailwind stacks give you additive action speed that affects everything — your clear speed feels faster than the numbers suggest.

Pros: Incredibly fast clear, great for mapping league start Cons: Single target is weaker; needs Rain of Arrows or a secondary skill for bosses

Avoid at League Start

• Minion builds — skeleton pathing is slow and pathing got worse in EA patches
• Melee — still functional but the campaign is punishing to pure melee without specific defensive nodes
• Anything requiring Uniques — don't plan around Starforge or Mjölner early; trade is slow league start week 1

Currency Priority First Week

1. Chaos Orb anything that gives you resistances (cap at 75%)
2. Don't Exalt rare items until maps — wait for upgrades to be worth it
3. Sell 6-links you aren't using; they're worth more than you think week 1
