What Is Heat and Why Does It Matter?

The Heat system is the biggest mechanical addition in Tekken 8, and it changes almost everything about how rounds play out. If you don't understand it, you'll lose to it constantly.

How to Activate Heat

You have two ways to enter Heat state:

  1. Heat Burst — press R1/RB in neutral. Spends your full Heat gauge but gives you a quick armored hit and activates Heat immediately. Use this to blow through pressure.
  2. Heat Engager — most characters have specific moves that activate Heat on hit or block. These are more efficient because you don't waste the burst.

You get one Heat bar per round. Once it's gone, it's gone.

What Changes in Heat

During Heat (which lasts about 10 seconds by default), you get:

  • Heat Smash access — your character's new super move, often the hardest-hitting combo ender in their kit
  • Chip damage on block — opponents take chip on blocked moves; creates real pressure
  • Power Crush heat extensions — some characters can extend Heat duration through specific moves
  • Enhanced moves — many normals change properties entirely when used in Heat

Heat Dash (The Important One)

Most players miss this. When you hit someone and you're in Heat, you can press forward + R1 immediately to do a Heat Dash — a fast follow-up dash that keeps the combo going. This is how Heat combos deal 60-80 damage off a standard launcher.

Practice the input. The timing is tighter than it looks.

Defensive Heat Use

Heat Burst has armor. In a tight spot with 20% HP left and your opponent rushing you down? Heat Burst through their pressure, convert the hit, end the round. It's there for this.

Quick Reference

Activation Cost Use Case
Heat Burst Full gauge Reversal, aggressive opener
Heat Engager None (on move) Combo extension, okizeme
Heat Dash Heat timer Mid-combo damage extension
Heat Smash Ends Heat Max-damage combo ender
